As an animator and an ice cream seller

So, I am now officially working as a freelance animator and an ice cream seller. It's pretty epic. Here are some sketches for a client.

What now?

I have honestly been off for a while.

In the time I was in my internship, I dedicated a lot of time to it and learned a lot. The rest of the time, I spent finding festivals, making math to check how much money I could spend and writing up addresses to places all over the world. To be honest, I also gave myself time to see friends and enjoy my family.

So where did the art time go?

There was none really, just doodles here and there.

But I am finally done with my internship with a new set of knowledge and completely out of money to send my film into festivals.

After winning First Friday Shorts at the Loft Cinema ( a cultural cinema theatre in Tucson AZ) I realized that I had nothing really done. I mean, I was able to successfully finish my first film and send it to festivals. I was able to go to an internship and learn how the commercial animation industry worked and how hard it really was.

But it didn't put me off.

Now I have all this free time until I find a job.

So, whats next?

1. Make several illustrations to add to my portfolio.
2. Freelance as much as I can to get experience.
3. Start writing out my stories in script form to be prepared for them in the future.
4. Start on my next animated short.

Endorphins are serious business.

To Start Off

So, my search in the states for a job has been set on a hiatus.

Why?

Because in order to hire me, immigration work needs to be done and I have not yet enough experience enough for anyone to hire.

So, what am I going to do?

Start working freelance in Mexico and settle here for a little bit while I figure out how to get over that visa process. For now, getting better at animating sounds good to me. In the meantime, I will have to make money to survive, haha.

So I decided on coming back to my little home town and starting with graphic design. I will be working on shorts, and a graphic novel that I will probably start typing in an hour or so.

An animator has to do everything to get to their dream, even if it means to do something completely different than what intended.

And just for laughs, here's my first quick poster job.

Film Festivals

So, now that I have officially started to enter my short into festivals, its been very hectic. I find out about festivals I am qualified for (and can afford) almost last minute. Today I burnt so many dvds at my internship because my dvd burner died sometime in the past month! Murphey's Law, how I despise you.

Otherwise, I have learnt a variety of good things.

1. Withoutabox.com has to be one of the nicest ways to find film festivals that have similar qualifications to what I have and a very fast way of registration. You have to fill ALOT of information at first but it goes quite smoothly once its all done.

2. After a while, registration fees get expensive!! I have found registration fees from $10 to $70. Imagine trying to get your film into at least 5 festivals, which cost around $30 a piece....it can get quite pricey for someone who doesn't even have a job yet!

3. Learned how to make my own passport picture! XD Thank you google for providing with the information I needed so I didn't need to spend more on photos so I could use it on festivals.

4. Once you have everything together (dvd, picture, biography, and stills), it tends to go quite well. All is left is to wait and hope for the best. Registering into festivals is in inversion to get your name out there.

I want to animate my new short in a style like this. I will be putting up some tests soon but yes, this is my new challenge and I am super excited to try it out.

Voices~!

Today I officially start on my new animated project titled, "If I Were a Man". I went out and recorded several women's voices reciting a small poem I made, added a small twist to it and I am now ready to start sketching. The whole project is going to be based entirely on the audio. I have never done anything of the sort but I know where I have my inspiration and where this is all going.

Posts of inspiration and research soon to come!

Rango

It was really fun, really different and worth a watch. Think twice before taking your kids though. There's some scenes that a few screamed at.

Catching Up to Myself

So, reviving this blog now, in order to keep up with myself. Will post some art, animations and stuff. I really wanted to revive this blog and start doing the things I love to do. And try new techniques! I never knew how much more knowledge hunger I would have after graduating but I want to learn more and do more. I am really at a point in my life in which I am really happy with myself. Need to keep it up.
